WELCOME TO
MY WEBSITE & MY WORK

About.

Because Every Voice Matters…

I do what I do because I have never wanted to do anything else. And I love what I do.

I am a storyteller. I’m lucky to work in concurrent, complimentary careers: as a director, a writer and an animation voice and casting director. I also teach all those skills.

In whatever area you may choose to work with me, I work with the same level of skill, experience and total commitment to the project. I always seek to give – as Tina Turner once said – “…simply the best…”

Writer.

Stories Begin with Belief…

I have always written.  Early on, though, I wasn’t entirely sure I could.

One Friday, I met a very eminent BBC drama producer. I told him I‘d written a script I was sure he’d be interested in. “Bring it in on Monday,” he said, “and I’ll read it.” I hadn’t written a word.  So, I wrote a 110 page drama script over the weekend and took it in on the Monday morning.  He read it and he liked it – a lot.

And that’s when I believed I could write.

Ever since then, I’ve written for all ages and all genres, both in Great Britain and in the United States.

Most recently, I’ve focussed on children’s television. I was Head Writer on Thomas and Friends for six years and from there, moved on to write for many of the leading children’s shows.

Writing is second nature to me – as is comedy and character. So, there is never, ever, a shortage of stories in my head…

Voice & Casting Director.

Where Performance Meets Precision…

I offer a complete casting service, for all shows I voice direct.

For me, voice directing is the perfect synthesis of writing, directing and acting. It’s a made-in-heaven match for my skills.

Finding the right voice is key to success in animation. I search for actors with care, using my extensive experience and industry knowledge. In the studio, I know how to get the best performance – whether the actor be an A-Lister or absolute beginner. I encourage and make actors comfortable, giving them confidence and enabling them to be and do their best.

I enjoy and pay a lot of attention to the collaboration with producers and writers, understanding their wishes and vision and taking them on into voice and performance.  And always on time and on budget.

Importantly, everyone enjoys it. Because… the best things happen when everyone’s happy, as two EMMY’s awarded to Paddington bears out!

With Actors, For Story, Always…

I went to theatre school as a child and read English and Drama at Uni, so acting was my first career choice.

When I started directing in the theatre and then in television drama, I took with me all my experience and understanding of acting and actors. It forms the cornerstone of my directing work.

I’ve had the wonderful good fortune of working with some amazing actors, both here and in L.A. – many of whom have remained friends.

I start with the story, then find the actors best able to be that story and then – make it visual.  It’s a process of creative collaboration and mutual respect – with everyone.

And, for me, it doesn’t really get better than that…

Teacher.

Nurturing Talent with Heart and Humour…

I really enjoy teaching.

It’s challenging, it’s stimulating and it’s very, very rewarding.

It also makes total sense to me, to share the diversity of my career experience.

I’m equally happy teaching script writing, acting, camera technique, acting for stage, acting for screen and directing.I’ve also been known to hang wallpaper on a flat for a set – which perhaps isn’t my greatest skill…

I find teaching a great privilege.  It’s wonderful to see students achieve.
