WRITER
Every story starts somewhere.
I have always written. Early on, though, I was not entirely sure I could.
From drama and comedy to children’s television, I have written for different ages, genres and audiences in Britain and the United States. Character, humour and storytelling have always been at the heart of my work.
HOW IT BEGAN
110 pages. One weekend.
The moment I began to believe I could write.
One Friday, I met an eminent BBC drama producer. I told him I had written a script I was sure he would be interested in. He asked me to bring it in on Monday.
There was only one problem: I had not written a word.
So I wrote a 110-page drama script over the weekend and took it in on Monday morning. He read it, and he liked it. A lot.
That was when I believed I could write. I have been writing ever since.
THE CRAFT
Comedy, character and a love of story.
Writing is second nature to me, as are comedy and character. I love finding the personality that makes someone memorable and the moment that makes an audience care.
My experience as an actor, director and voice director informs how I approach the page. I know that the words must not only tell a story, but also give performers something truthful and enjoyable to bring to life.
CHILDREN’S TELEVISION
Six years as Head Writer on Thomas & Friends.
In recent years my writing has focused particularly on children’s television. I spent six years as Head Writer on Thomas & Friends and went on to write for many other leading children’s programmes.
The challenge is always to make a story clear, lively and full of character, whether it is for a long-established series or an entirely new world.
